About Elaine Mummery
Establishing my first acne/skin clinic
I opened my first acne/skin clinic on October 2007 in Glasgow. I am a nutritionist, certified and insured. I am the author of the book “The essential guide to getting rid of spots and acne“. In these early days, I knew a small percentage of what I know now. These years of running my acne/ skin clinic clearly told me that what caused acne for one person could be completely different as to what caused it for another.
Clearing acne was a lot harder than I had anticipated. I charged very little money in the early days of my clinic and not even enough to cover my overheads but I had enough information to improve the skin of the majority of my patients and in around 30% to clear their skin long-term.
One practitioner said to me back then that there would always be patients that could not be cured. For me that was unacceptable, I wanted to clear the skin of each and every one of my patients but, the problem was that there was insufficient research conducted into the cause of acne. I had already spent years collecting everything that I could find which was combined in my book ‘Spotless‘. It became clear that I had to put into place a new approach.
Cataloging spot types along with symptoms
With each patient, I noted spot types, where these spots were appearing and any other symptoms my patients had. In this way I was able to build up a database that allowed me to categorise spots. The next step was to find a suitable treatment process for each spot type. This took a lot longer but gradually the percentage of my patients who experienced good results started to grow.
I still had patients that came to me with very poor health and no matter what plan I provided their skin did not clear and their health did not improve. It was time to dig even deeper.
Hair and blood Testing
The use of hair testing, came to be after a couple of patients brought these to my clinic. I was sceptical at first but that was simply because I was unable to interpret these. I was sure that this was the way forward but had to spend considerable months learning how to interpret the results.
It has been many years now since the introduction of hair testing and I do ask each and every patient to provide me with a hair test as well as specific blood tests for Vitamin D, B12 and Iron. My forms also provide me with information on my patients diet and any other health issues. In this way I have all the facts about each patient.
The more facts I have the quicker I can resolve acne
What I can clearly see from the use of hair testing is that for the majority of my patients, their acne is the result of hereditary nutritional deficiencies. Early signs of deficiencies can include, constant throat or ear infections, sleep problems, travel sickness, anxiety, stomach issues and tantrums.
If these symptoms were treated correctly, by the use of hair testing to identify underlying health issues, and not simply by the constant use of antibiotics, these people could have avoided acne.
In one case that I had a young boy had been given 13 courses of antibiotics by the time he was 5. This was for ear and throat infections. These antibiotics had wiped out his good bacteria and blocked up his liver. His skin was dreadful and his health was poor. It took one year to reverse the damage from the use of these drugs and my patient eventually enjoyed clear beautiful skin and great health.
I am not a believer in long term restricted diets
At times I need to put a patient on a specific diet, but this generally is only for a short period of time and thereafter they can widen their diet.
Some patients have had to change their diet completely due to the ridiculousness of what they have been eating for example I had a young lady in to see me who ate chocolate bars for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It wasn’t until she actually wrote down what she ate did she realise how bad her diet was. A few simple changes and her skin was clear.
A young boy came to see me in London and he drank cola all day long. He cut this out and simply just by doing so his skin improved by 50%.
The majority of my patients however have very healthy diets. Some have removed gluten, dairy and sugar and yet acne continues. So much is written about the connection of these to acne and yet I can find no spots that relate to gluten; 5% of my patients are lactose intolerant; 60% do not have sufficient nutrients to balance and absorb sugar. The removal of these are seldom necessary but resolving the root cause of why the body is reacting to these is essential.
Natural solution v pharmaceutical drugs
The majority of my patients have used various forms of antibiotics, the pill, various skin lotions and of course Roaccutane, the drug that many people online claim to be the ‘miracle drug’. The problem is that all acne is treated in the same manner. The use of these drugs is very much a hit or miss approach. When these drugs do work, they often only work for a short time. The reason why, is because these drugs do not address the root cause of acne.
The public would be horrified if they realised how little medical research has been conducted into the cause of acne as well as the side effects of using these drugs. As well as that the long term health problems associated with failing to address the root cause of acne.
I have worked with numerous doctors over the years and have treated family members of dermatologists. Each confirm that there is a serious lack of research and that the drugs seldom offer a long term solution.
A natural solution resolves many health issues
The majority of my patients have a long list of health problems to include, anxiety, stomach issues such as bloating, burning, wind; depression, low self esteem, crawling skin, low energy levels, sleep problems, mood swings to name but a few. At my clinic these health issues are resolved because all of these relate to the appearance of acne.
London and Glasgow acne /skin clinic
I have had the privilege to work with 100s of patients at both acne/ skin clinic. Many of whom continue to recommend my services to family and friends. I also continue to coach other health practitioners who wish to understand how to treat acne at a deeper level.
In 2013 I made the decision to close both clinics simply because as a family we opted to move to France. It was my hope to continue with the London clinic but due to family circumstances this has not been possible. I continue to treat patients online and offer Skype /facetime consultations. If you would like to uncover and treat the root cause of your acne, please feel free to get in touch with me.
With very best wishes
